Feeling Stuck Before Your Therapy Session?

Imagine this: You’ve finally carved out the time for your therapy session—after a busy morning, a hectic commute, or a long day at work. You’re looking forward to connecting with your therapist, but then you start to feel a bit panicked …

"What is there even to talk about?"
"Where do I begin?"

That anxious feeling is more common than you think. Life pulls our attention in a hundred directions, and sometimes it’s hard to know what’s most important especially if it’s your first appointment or it’s been a while since your last session.

Here’s the good news: You don’t need to have it all figured out before you arrive. Therapy isn’t just for “big problems” it’s for every feeling, thought, or concern that matters to you.

That said, therapy is an investment of your time and energy, so if you want a starting place, here are a few questions to consider before sit down or log on:

  • What’s currently going well?

  • What’s not going as well as you’d like?

  • Where in life do you feel the most friction or stress?

  • If things were better, what would that look like?

  • How do you currently feel, and how would you like to feel?

Taking a few quiet moments to reflect over your morning coffee, during a short walk, or on your commute can help you leave your session feeling lighter, clearer, and more accomplished.

Here’s the important part: Even if you show up feeling unprepared, your session can still be valuable. A counsellor’s role is to help you explore what’s on your mind, organize your thoughts, and get the most out of your time together. Just showing up is work in and of itself and we’re always glad to see you, however prepared (or not) you feel.
