My Personal Journey with Gambling and a Proven Path to Recovery
The first time I remember gambling, I was about seven years old.
I was on vacation with my parents in a small bar in the Caribbean when they handed me a few quarters to play a slot machine in the corner so they could socialize.
To everyone’s surprise, I won big. I won so big that the machine didn’t have enough quarters to pay out the jackpot!
After covering the cost of dinner and drinks, my parents let me feed most of those quarters back into the machine that same night. We were all blissfully unaware that this was the beginning of a pattern I would repeat countless times in my life.
“What began as an early childhood experience of gambling quickly turned into a repeating pattern I would struggle to break for years.”
The Instant Pull of the Casino
As an adult, gambling became a problem almost instantly.
I vividly remember my first visit to a small casino in Vancouver. My heart raced with excitement. After spending a few hours there with friends in the middle of the day, I found myself returning alone later that same night: and then several more times that week.
Deep down, I think I knew right away that this was going to be an issue for me. I had already taken risks, already lost, and already fallen into a well-laid trap.
The next ten years became a cycle of trying to escape and then fighting to stay out.
Gambling is a Growing Problem in a Digital Age
Now, as a counsellor, I’ve made it a priority to share my story and experiences with others who have been caught in the same trap.
As a society, we seem to have decided: whether through planning or apathy: that we are okay with these traps being set. In fact, in many ways, we’re setting even more.
Gambling is far more accessible today than when I was struggling. This modern landscape includes:
Online Casinos: Hundreds of platforms are just a click away on your phone or laptop.
Aggressive Design: Games are engineered to be more engaging and habit-forming than ever before.
Increased Costs: Digital platforms allow for faster, more expensive play than traditional machines.
